INSPIRED BY MOROCCAN ZILLIJ

I'm inspired by Kleenex tissues... really?

I was walking down the aisle of my local supermarket as you do, when I came across this beautifully designed Kleenex box of tissues <-  never thought I would write something so weird.

But it's true, Kleenex have a 'Collections' range which have been designed to be more contemporary than the traditional Kleenex box. I love the concept of even being able to utilise a tissue box as a homeware accessory. Genius.

Close up. It looks so realistic.

This particular box has a Moroccan zillij design. I love the intracacies of zillj, in fact I have a special place in my heart for all Moroccan handicraft. I have watched the artisans hard at work during my travels to Morocco. A lot of time, effort and skill goes into the stunning pieces they create and these traditions are handed down to each generation. This particular zillij process comprises of cutting and placing individual chips of terracotta tiles to make a geometric design. By hand.

When you think about Zillij, what springs to mind? Probably foundations, walls, ceilings, swimming pools, hammams, tables.

Well, I have found that this traditional Moorish visual art has transformed and inspired other creative channels beyond ceramics.
